I have embarked on a new way of eating. I have adopted a ketogenic lifestyle. A ketogenic diet is one of many variations of low carb eating. However, with a ketogenic diet, it is low carb, and high fat with moderate protein.
In a ketogenic diet, you are essentially depleting the body’s glucose stores, and forcing the body to turn to fat stores for energy through the process of ketosis (not to be confused with ketoacidosis, which can be life-threatening for diabetics). Many people automatically equate low carb with high protein. In the case of ketosis, one does not want to eat too much protein, as the body will accommodate for excess protein by producing glucose.
Everyone’s body is different, so if ketosis is something you want to embark on, you will want to research your options carefully, select a ketogenic calculator to give you the right macronutrient percentages to give you the right K/AK (ketogenic to anti-ketogenic). My personal favorite calculator can be found here. Other good calculators can be found here and here.
There is so much information out there regarding different ways of eating and lifestyles. This is the one that I choose to embark upon for my own personal benefits. It has helped me ingest fewer processed foods. In fact, I would say at least 90% of my eating is now clean. I have broken my sugar addiction to the tune of thinking previous foods I would enjoy are now too sweet! I plan to get blood work done in a couple of weeks (September 2014) and I will report any changes — good or bad.
I will be 40 in 2016. It is my hope to be the fittest I have ever been, and I believe I can get there. I am off to a good start, that’s for sure. And I plan to use parts of this blog to hold me accountable for my goals.
